About Nellai

The story of Tirunelveli getting it's name goes back to the 16th century. The erstwhile Tirunelveli was called as Venuvanam (Venu-Bamboo ,Vanam-Forest)which means “Bamboo forest”.Once upon a time, there was a poor priest named Vedapattar who lived in Venuvanam. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Everyday he would worship Lord Shiva by offering prasadam and would distribute it to the poor. He was once a wealthy man but he had spent all his wealth in the service of his dear Lord. While he was taking bath,it started raining heavily. He was very much worried and started rushing to the temple as there was only a little paddy left and if it gets wet,he would not be able to prepare Prasadam. He sincerely prayed God to help him protect the paddy.
